1931 - Coburg Harriers Hares and HoundsThey would be fined for litter bugging now, but back in the 1930s it was great fun. Len Curnow, the runner second from the right in this picture from 1931 tells how it worked. ‘They hares (the runners carrying the bags of streamer paper) would go out first and lay a trail. There was no set course. The trail could take the runners anything from five to twelve miles, depending on the time of the year. After a delay of half an hour or so the hounds (all the other runners in the two clubs taking part) would take off and follow the paper trail set by the hares. The run would finish when the four hares were located. The fun of these cross country runswas to lay false trails. I would take a couple of bob in my shorts or jacket top. We would lay a false trail and then duck into a pub for a quick beer and watch all the other runners come along and charge off up the false trail. When they were out of sight, we would take off in another direction.’
