2009/10 AV Shield - North West Region Round 9 - Coburg Saturday, 12 December 2009 Over 55 athletes were in attendance for the last Athletics Victoria Shield meeting for 2009 at Coburg on 12 December - a recent record. For the first time in many years, our largest team of the day was the U16 boys, ensuring a convincing victory for our junior boys on a day also dominated by our victorious U20 men. The club's U14 girls and 40 + men both placed second and the U16 girls were third. Only percentage now separates our U16 boys from a finals berth with our U14 girls now comfortably in third place and the U16 girls have closed the gap on the final four to just three points. The U20 men are second and 40+ men remain on top of their ladder on percentage Remarkably, eight athletes made their debut for the Coburg Harriers. From Coburg Little Athletics, we welcomed twins Aidan and Matthew Blair. The boys made an immediate impact with Aidan Blair (M13) setting a club record in the Hammer on his way to third place for the U16 boys. Benan Oztorun (M16) did well in the Long Jump with 4.05 m, Sophia Petropoulos put in a solid all round effort placing second in her heat of the 200 m and 6th in the Shot Put. And making their season debuts were Ken Souyave (M40) in the 800 m, Brian Delaney (M40) in the 5000 m and Adam Larsson (M20) had a good start to his season with 25.41 in the 200 m Making his North West Region season debut was Bola Lawal with a win in the 200 m, streaking away from the field to break his own Open club record with 21.14. Leah Polycarpou (F14) won the 800 m and 3000 m, like Lawal breaking her own records. Both athletes score a mention in the latest issue of the AV Wrap. Kira Davey (F16) improved on the F15 Hammer record she set earlier in the season in finishing second for our U16 girls team, Len Hallet improved on his own M60-64 record for 5000 m, and in the Shot Put Shane Wilson broke the M15 record (and came third on the day) with Shaun Stewart doing the same in the M14 age group - both compete in our U16 boys team Other athletes to do well were Tim Conway (M16) who diversified in winning the 1500 m Walk and High Jump before placing second in the 200 m Hurdles, Simo Rasic (M20) won the 200 m with Michael Dziadkiewicz (M20) second, Liam Magee (M1) won his second 5000 m for the season and Steven Marsh (M20) earned important points for his team in winning the High Jump and coming second in the Shot Put. Kira Davey (F16) followed up her Hammer record with runner up in the High Jump, Shot Put and third in the 200 m Hurdles, Amber Dominutti (F14) was second in the 200 m Hurdles, Paddy Martin (M16) was second in the 1500 m Walk, Ivan Galletti (M40) was second in the 200 m, Shane Wilson (M16) was second in the 3000 m, Philip van Dueren (M40) was second in the High Jump and Phil Curtain (M40) was second in the Shot Put Maddy Black (F14) was third in the 200 m, Tim Erickson (M40) was third in the 3000 m Walk, Shaun Stewart (M16) followed up his Shot Put record with third in the High Jump, Ken Carter (M40) was third in the Hammer and Jarrow Sarson-Lawrence (M20) was third in the 800 m. The Wright family had a great day out at the Shot Put ring - father Stephen (M40) was third as was daughter Simone Wright (F14) with Chelsea Wright (F16) winning her division. Chelsea then placed third in the Hammer. The club's U16 boys 4 x 400 m relay team was third, while the U16 girls were second as were the club's 40 + men's team So with nine rounds down, momentum is building nicely with three night meets to look forward to after Christmas. At this time, we can be confident that our U14 girls, U20 men and 40+ men will all feature in the Region Final to be held at Aberfeldie on 6 February 2009. For both our boys and girls U16 teams, their chances of making the final will depend heavily on whether they can muster similar numbers to those recorded at Coburg. It certainly sets up an intriguing last quarter of the season that could likely go down to the last athlete in the last event in Round 12 to decide if those teams make it through Tomorrow afternoon is the last pre-Christmas official training session for the Brian Delaney coached middle distance squad from 6:00 pm. Please bring a plate so that we can have our Christmas break up at the conclusion of training. This is just a laid-back get together that we now tend to have each year and friends and family all welcome to join us after training at 7:30 pm. So far as training for next week or so goes, a group will be meeting at the track on Thursday evening. More information about that tomorrow night. It is not an official training session and athletes are encouraged to enjoy Christmas Eve with the night off Looking further ahead, although it seems crazy to say it's now only just over a week away, is the club's annual New Year's Day cricket match. Held on the infield at the Harold Stevens Athletics Field it's a fantastic family day out with all players getting a bat and a bowl - even the "On Trackers" (sorry, a bit of Little Aths jargon there). Beginning from midday, people generally bring down their New Years Eve leftovers to fortify the constitution with salads, dips, and so forth before we kick off play. One of the highlights of the club calendar. I'll be there in my whites If we do not see you before the break, please enjoy the holiday period with your friends and family. For those travelling please be safe and take regular rest periods to guard against fatigue. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our athletes for their efforts over the past three months. For the parents of our little athletes, you have my heartfelt gratitude and I hope you enjoy this short respite from the constant ferrying of our athletes between two venues. To all our athletes, have a fantastic Christmas and safe New Year holiday and I look forward to seeing you at training after the break or when competition resumes
