Celebrating 80 Years of Women in Athletics Melbourne Town Hall Sunday, 15 November 2009
Twelve current and former members of the club had the honour and the privilege to represent the Coburg Harriers at Athletics Victoria's Celebrating 80 Years of Women in Athletics function at the Melbourne Town Hall. You will be pleased to note that our proud club which spans 113 years and the Coburg Womens Amateur Athletic Club which spanned 57 years had the fourth most number of representatives, a fact we should be very proud of given we rank 13th in terms of our Athletics Victoria membership
Several of the club's Life Members were in attendance including Olympic medallist Reline Boyle, Sherie Doney, Laura Neilson and Ian Rickard. And some former Coburg athletes made an appearance including Kristina Hines, Joy Aird, Bette Neal and Lyn Reing. The format involved a welcome speech by Athletics Victoria president Anne Lord and roving interviews by Australian Olympic representative Tamsyn Lewis of prominent athletics journalists, long time officials and coaches. The main presentation ended with a panel discussion involving Olympic medallists Catherine Freeman, Brenda Jones, Debbie Flintoff-King and afore mentioned Coburg Harriers life member Raelene Boyle
The function was an excellent vehicle to celebrate the achievements of women athletes but more importantly it outlined to those present the strong bonds and enduring friendships that remain in such a close knit sport such as ours. I was proud to represent our club at such a function will no doubt live long in the memory of those present - including myself, Sharee Sharam, Margaret Cassidy, Diane Brimacombe, Rey Villegas, Margaret and Jessica Farrugia - and certainly there seemed some enthusiasm of those assembled from the club to make sure we are around for the centenary celebration
