2009/10 AV Shield - North West Region
Round 3 - Meadowglen
Saturday, 24 October 2009

The club's best turn out for the season for the Round 3 Athletics Victoria Shield meeting at Meadowglen last Saturday afternoon secured some very good points for the club that saw four of our teams finish in the top three. Once a number of queries with the results are resolved, we should see wins to our U20 men, 40 + men, our U14 girls placing second and our U16 girls coming third. Well done to athletes in those teams. This was helped in no small part by the fact that Meadowglen is not well supported by clubs not close to the track and a good turn out by our club generally secures a good result and so this proved again

Of the 35 athletes in attendance, it was pleasing to see a third of these were athletes competing for the first time this summer. Making their debut for the club were a quartet of talented athletes from Coburg Little Athletics. Xavier Burton (U16) won his heat of the 200 m, Alessandra Galletti (U14) also did well in the 200 m while Dilshara Samaranayake (U14) and Mikaela Wright (U14) both performed well at the Long Jump. And making her summer season debut for the club was Stefanie Modesti (Women's Division 1) who surprised herself with a strong performance in the 800 m

Competing for the first time this season were Michael Dziadkiewicz (U20) who won the 200 m ahead of Steven Marsh (also U20), Philip van Dueren (40+) was third in the 800 m following a win in the High Jump, equalling the club's 50-54 age group record in the process, Glenn Carroll went close to a personal best in the 800 m, while both Rita Pana and Jessica Farrugia (Women's Div 1) had encouraging starts to the season in the 200 m

Those to do well included Liam Magee who won the 3000 m (Division 1 men), breaking another club age group record in the process, Charles Clark won the 200 m in the process unfortunately suffering an injury, Kira Davey (U16) won both the Hammer Throw (her first time doing this event) and the High Jump before coming third in the Long Jump and Shot Put, Ken Carter (40+) won the Hammer with Phil Curtain runner up before Curtain went on to win the Shot Put and Stephen Wright (40+) the Long Jump. Wins also to our U14 girls, U20 and 40 + men in the 4 x 400 m Relays

Tim Erickson (40+) again placed in the Walk with second place, as did Leah Polycarpou (U14) in the 3000 m and 800 m. Sam Dragon (U20) was second in the 800 m with another massive personal best ahead of Michael Clark who was third. Maddy Black (U14) was third in the 200 m Hurdles, Stella Radford (U16) proved her effort at the VSSSA Track & Field Champs was no fluke, placing third on Saturday in the 3000 m, Leigh Roux (U14) also placed third in this event which followed her third place in the 200 m, Shaun Stewart (U16) was third in the Shot Put and Benny Tancredi (M40+) was third in the 200 m

A very short turnaround to Round 4 this Thursday, 29 October 2009 at the Moonee Valley Athletics Track in Aberfeldie from 6:20 pm. On the program (as attached), the sprinters can enjoy the 100 m, 400 m and 4 x 100 m Relay, middle distance athletes can enjoy the 1500 m and Steeplechase, while the 2000 m Walk will run concurrently with the sprint hurdles from 6:20 pm sharp. The jumpers can enjoy the Triple Jump, while the throwers have the Javelin and Discus

Athletes are encouraged this Thursday to compete in the 400 m, particularly in the junior grades. According to the final qualifications set out by Athletics Victoria, only athletes with an individual 400 m recorded against their name this summer in AV Shield competition can be considered for relay team teams in the North West Region and/or Shield Final

The club is hosting our annual Run for Tanzania Charity Fun Run this Sunday morning, 1 November 2009 from 9:00 am. Numbers have been down for this worthy cause the last few years and all proceeds go to help support health projects in Tanzania. If each club member brought just one person to try the 12 km run or 6 km run/walk, we would double the numbers of last year's event. What's more, club members receive a discount on entry. Also, we will be in dire need of volunteers and if you are available for two hours from 8:30 am, your assistance would be very much appreciated

You are cordially invited to revel and reminisce 80 years of women’s athletics in Victoria, at an afternoon tea to celebrate the formation of the Victorian Women’s Amateur Athletics Association eight decades ago. The function will take place at the Melbourne Town Hall on Sunday 15 November 2009 from 1:00 pm. Please let me know if you would like to part of a Coburg Harriers table as we need to advise final numbers this week
