Another small turn out in Round 2 of the 2009/10 Athletics Victoria Shield season, this time at Williamstown. Nevertheless there were some very good results recorded with two of our athletes even featured in the latest edition of
AV Wrap, something that is long overdue in your correspondent's opinion. A host of athletes went very close to achieving personal bests and these results helped our Girls U14 come third for the day and our 40 + men were again second. After two completed rounds, our U14 girls lie third, the U16 girls are just one spot out of the top four and the club's 40 + men are second
Making their debut for the club were talented all-rounder Stephen Wright (men's 40), making an immediate impact with third in the Discus and Javelin. Brian Delaney trained Melanie Evans competed for the first time while two time Dr Marshall winner Len Hallett (40+ men) made his summer track debut for the club, coming fourth in the 100 m. Sprinters Adrianna Crea and Alex Hanson both recorded their second fastest ever 100 m times, Kira Davey recorded her second best ever Discus result for the club and Tim Erickson had his second fastest 2,000 m Walk in two seasons. Leah Polycarpou ran her fastest ever 1500 m for the club, going under five minutes and breaking her own club record
To the results and Phil Curtain underlined his value to the 40+ men's team in winning the Discus and Javelin, David Woods (40+ men) won the 400 m, Leah Polycarpou (U14) won both the 1500 m and 2000 m Steeplechase, Kira Davey (U16) won the High Jump and Liam Magee took out the 1500 m. Benny Tancredi (40+) was runner up in the 100 m, Maddy Black (U14) was second in the Javelin and third in the 400 m (almost breaking the club's U13 girls record) while Leigh Roux (U14) was second to Leah Polycarpou in the 1500 m. Tim Erickson (40+) was third in the 2000 m Walk and Shaun Stewart (U16) was third in his pet event - the High Jump
This weekend we travel north to the Meadowglen International Athletics Track in Epping. The sprinters can enjoy the 200 m and 4 x 400 m Relay. The middle distance athletes have the 800 m and 3000 m, the jump events are the Long Hurdles - 400 m for seniors, 200 m for juniors, Long Jump and High Jump. The walk is the 3000 m Walk with 1500 m Walk for U14's. Events not on the program this week include the Javelin and Discus. Junior athletes, the 200 m hurdles are on at 1:20 pm with the 1500 m Walk to follow at 1:30 pm. In the High Jump, the bar will be set at 1.00 m - 1.20 m from 1:00 pm and 1.15 m - 1.40 m from 1:40 pm
Please note that we have a very short turnaround to the next meet, with round four action this Thursday night at Aberfeldie from 6:00 pm
Looking further afield, the club is hosting our annual Run for Tanzania Charity Fun Run next Sunday morning, 1 November 2009 from 9:00 am. Numbers have been down for this worthy cause the last few years and all proceeds go to help support health projects in Tanzania. If each club member brought just one person to try the 12 km run or 6 km run/walk, we would double the numbers of last year's event. What's more, club members receive a discount on entry. Also, we will be in dire need of volunteers and if you are available for two hours from 8:30 am, your assistance would be very much appreciated
You are cordially invited to revel and reminisce 80 years of women’s athletics in Victoria, at an afternoon tea to celebrate the formation of the Victorian Women’s Amateur Athletics Association eight decades ago. The function will take place at the Melbourne Town Hall on Sunday 15 November 2009 from 1:00 pm. Please let me know if you would like to part of a Coburg Harriers table
Now a small correction. With regards accessing the Coburg track during the week, please note that on Monday nights the front straight is reserved for Coburg Little Athletics between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm. Between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm Little Athletics have the use of lanes 1 to 5 and lanes 6 to 10 are for general training. This is set out on the current track usage schedule, which we hope to have posted to the front gate of the track in the coming weeks
