2009 Australian Track & Field Championships and U18 Interstate Youth Match QEII Stadium, Brisbane 20 - 22 March 2009 The Coburg Harriers had two representatives at these Championships with Bola Lawal and Ellie Thom selected to represent Victoria. For Thom, her selection was secured through her performance at the Victorian junior championships
With the aid of a 0.3 tailwind, Bola Lawal finished second in his heat of the 100 m with 10.47 seconds to progress directly to the semi-final
In the second semi-final, a slight headwind of -0.4 saw Lawal hit the line in 10.51 seconds to secure third place and guarantee a place in the final
The final was held in similar conditions and in a tight finish, Lawal was in a dead heat to finish sixth with 10.51 seconds
The 200 metres was up next for Lawal, where second place in heat 2 saw Lawal progress to the final with 21.56 seconds
In a blustery -2.0 headwind, Lawal recorded a fantastic 21.33 seconds in the final to storm home in fifth place
The U18 Interstate Youth Match saw Ellie Thom compete in one individual and two relay events
In the 400 m, which was run as a straight final, Thom broke her own club age gtoup and open women’s record to cross the line in a blistering 57.49 and fourth place, just 0.11 seconds from a podium finish
In the 4 x 100 m Relay, Thom anchored the Victorian team to second place and secured the first of two silver medals
The second came in the 1000 m Sprint Medley, where again Thom was the anchor and very narrowly missed out on the gold
Congratulations and well done to both Bola Lawal and Ellie Thom on their selection for the Victorian team. You represented both yourselves and the club with pride
