2008/09 High Velocity Club - Meet 5
Olympic Park - Thursday, 12 February 2009

The penultimate Victorian Milers Club meet of the season was held in windy conditions on Olympic Park. With a record number of entries, the 800 m would be broken up into fourteen heats and the 3000 m into six graded races

Competing in the 3000 m was Coburg Harriers premier middle distance athlete Liam Magee. Hoping to improve on his season best 8:57.98, which was set in an Athletics Victoria Shield meeting at Coburg, Magee was keen to run well without the typical Shield meeting distraction of other having to run other events on the program and get close to his life time best of 8:38.90

Lining up in the B Heat (such was the quality of the athletes assembled for this meet), Magee was in the pack through the first lap, but lost touch soon after and found himself running out on his own in the howling head wind. Going through the first kilometre in 2:52, Magee was on track for a personal best

The fast start and the buffeting to the body from the strong winds down the straight conspired against the athletes and their hopes of quick times with the pace dipping slightly through the last couple of laps. Magee would finish his heat with an outstanding 8:49.8 and a new season best time

Well done Liam from all your colleagues at the Coburg Harriers
