2008/09 AV Shield North West Region
Round 12 - Aberfeldie
Saturday, 31 January 2009

The last round of the Athletics Victoria Shield North West Region competition was held as a twilight round instead of the scheduled day meet that promised a fourth consecutive day of forty degree temperatures. While the extreme heat did not eventuate conditions were still quite warm when competition began at 6:00 pm, although a fresh wind was bringing some relief to athletes. While team results are not yet out, I am pleased to confirm that by the end of competition, five Coburg Harriers team confirmed their place at the North West Region Final to be held on Saturday afternoon at Aberfeldie from 1:00 pm - men's Division 2, men's 40+, men's U18 and both men's and women's U16 teams

Warren Burke (40+) won the 400 m and was third in the 800 m, while our women's U16, men's Division 2 and 40 + won the 4 x 200 m Relay, with women's Division 1 and men's Division 3 third. Kira Davey (U16) was equal second in the High Jump, Philip van Dueren (40+) was runner up with Amber Dominutti third (U16). In the 400 m Jay Blake (Div 2) and Gary Blake (40+) were runner up, as was Celeste White (U18), while Leah Polycarpou (U16), Brian Delaney (40+) and Mohammed Reese (Div 3) all came third. In the 3000 m, Matthew Smith (U18) was runner up with Philip van Dueren (40+) and Liam Magee, while Amber Dominutti (U16), Josh Persson (U18) and Ken Souyave (40+) were third. Tim Erickson (40+) was second in the 3000 m Walk and third place went to Matina Konstantinakos (U16) in the 100 m, Kira Davey (U16) in the Triple Jump, Philip van Dueren (40+) in the Javelin and Ken Carter (40+) in the Hammer

There were "only" four club records broken and three of those came from the relay's. I say only because we have been used to seeing up to half a dozen at each meet. Nevertheless, well done to Leah Polycarpou (U13) who once again improved on her own 800 m record. Our U16 women improved on their own 4 x 200 m relay record - congratulations to Jessica Farrugia (U16), Kira Davey (U14), Leah Polycarpou (U13) and Matina Konstantinakos (U15) there. Celeste White, Adrianna Crea and Alex Hanson - all U17 athletes - helped Rita Pana in breaking the Open women's 4 x 200 m Relay record. And at a special request, the club put together Adam Larsson (U19), Adam Weber (U19), Matthew Mifsud (U18) and Steven Marsh (U17) so that the boys could have a crack at the U19 & U20 record - the boys smashed the old mark by five seconds. Well done to all athletes

Kira Davey (U16) recorded a personal best in the Triple Jump, while a fast finishing Matthew Smith did the same in the 3000 m. Mohammed Reese (Div 2) recorded season bests in the 200 m and 400 m, Ben Weber (Div 2) did the same in the Javelin and Triple Jump, Rory Smyth (U16) also jumped a season best in the Triple Jump, Esther Traine threw a season best in the Javelin before her quickest 400 m of the summer, with Philip van Dueren (40+) doing the same in Hammer to book his place in this event at the Region Final. The 100 m saw season bests to Jessica Farrugia (U16), Matthew Millington (U16), Alexandra Hanson (U18), Adam Larsson (Div 2) and Adam Weber (Div 2). And the 400 m saw season bests to Liam Magee, just edging out Josh Traine on the line in their heat, while Gary Blake also recorded a season best when he finished over the top of super coach Brian Delaney in their heat

Congratulations to those athletes competing at the Region Final on Saturday. To those that missed out, thank you for your efforts this season. Our Women's U18 and Women's Division 1 teams had a tough season on the scoreboard, but recorded strong individual performances. Celeste White was the lynchpin of our U18 girls, ably supported by Adrianna Crea and Alex Hanson, both of whom improved as the season went on. Our Division 1 women benefitted from the untiring efforts of Esther Traine who did almost every event on the program, while Julie Torrini and Rita Pana showed encouraging signs of form as the season wore on. And special mention to Roxanne Watts who will be one to watch next season. Watts broke several club age group throws records and, along with quality middle distance runner Sharee Sharam, could well form the backbone of a strong Coburg Harriers women's team in years to come

If you are not competing in the Region Final, please consider coming down to support those athletes who are. The club would also be grateful for any support you could provide as team managers, event volunteers or officials. And don't forget that at the conclusion of competition, dinner has been booked at the Pascoe Vale Hotel from 6:00 pm in order to celebrate the season and hopefully a few teams through to the Athletics Victoria Shield Final

There has been some concern raised over the conditions we are likely to face on Saturday with the mercury tipped to top 44 degrees in Essendon. At this particular point in time, North West Region management are adamant that we will proceed at 1:00 pm with all events on the program. I will keep you informed by email and text message should that situation change, but right now all I can say is turn up ready to compete!

Finally, don't forget to keep the night of Saturday, 28 February 2009 free in your diary for the Coburg Harriers summer Presentation Night with arrival from 6:30 pm for a 7:00 pm start. With the venue to be confirmed on Friday the likely cost will be $20 per head (less for juniors). We are hoping to secure a guest speaker and you will see the presentation of the Cullen Cup trophy winner for best athlete, Daryl Thomson Shield for best Coburg Little Athletics centre athlete in the Coburg Harriers, best division winners and lots more. With over seventy athletes having competed for the club so far this season, it promises to be a big night. We will be asking you to confirm your attendance closer to the date
