2008/09 AV Shield North West Region
Round 11 - Aberfeldie
Tuesday, 20 January 2009
Results are now in from last Tuesday's Round 11 meet of the Athletics Victoria Shield North West Region competition. Held in warm conditions, the Coburg Harriers had their biggest turnout since Round 3 and the club scored very well across the board as a result. The club's Division 2 men were beaten narrowly for the second week in a row, but maintain a healthy 14.5 point lead on top of the ladder and will finish the season in first place. Our men's 40 + team returned to the winners list (after their first defeat of the season in Round 10) and with a 19 point gap to second will also finish on top of the ladder. The club's U18 and U16 men both finished third in Round 11 to maintain third place on their respective ladders and their participation in the Region Final looks assured. On the women's side, our U16 women scored a very narrow victory and should finish the season on top of their ladder

In his debut performance for the season, Rohan King won the Div 2 Shot Put, while Ben Webber won in Div 3. The U16 girls 4 x 100 m relay team won their division in a time quicker than our Open women. In 40+ men, Joe Brown won the 200 m, Warren Burke was first in the 400 m and third in the 200 m, Ken Carter won the Discus, Hammer and came third in the Shot Put. Leah Polycarpou (U16) was runner up in the 3000 m, Steven Marsh (U18) was third in the 200 m before running second in the 400 m and Liam Magee was runner up in the 1500 m and 5000 m. For 40 + men, Tim Erickson was second in the Walk, Brian Delaney was second in the 400 m and Philip van Dueren was second in the 5000 m and Hammer to go with his third placing in the 1500 m! Third place also in the U16 women's Discus and Shot Put went to Kira Davey, Tim Conway (U16) was third in the 400 m, Matthew Smith (U18) was third in the 1500 m, Ben Webber (Div 2) was third in the Triple Jump and in 40+ men Gary Blake came third in the 400 m and Daryl Thomson was third in the Discus

There were eight club records broken. In the 4 x 100 m Relay, the women's U16 team broke their own record - congratulations to Jessica Farrugia, Kira Davey, Matina Konstantinakos and Amber Dominutti. Joe Brown broke his own M60-64 record in the 200 m, Ken Carter broke the Discus record for M55-59 and added a season best in the Hammer.  Kira Davey broke the U14 record in the 80 m Hurdles, then set a new U14 & U15 record for the 4 kg Shot Put before recording a season best in the 200 m. Leah Polycarpou broke the U13 women's record for 1500 m and 3000 m and Roxanne Watts broke her own club F35-39 record for the Discus

And plenty of personal and season bests. Apologies if some of these are both. Personal bests to Jay Blake in the 400 m, Sam Dragon in the 3000 m, Alana Guerin in the 1500 m smashing the six minute mark and Josh Persson and Matthew Smith in the 1500 m. Season bests went to Warren Burke in the 1500 m, Tim Conway in the 200 m and 400 m, Adrianna Crea in the 200 m and 400 m, Amber Dominutti had a big night with season bests in the 1500 m, 200 m, and 400 m. Matina Konstantinakos a season best in the 200 m, Steven Marsh in the 400 m, Megan Marsh in the Discus, Mohamed Reese in the 1500 m and 200 m,  Benny Tancredi a season best in the 200 m, Daryl Thomson in the 1500 m, Julie Torrini with a season best in the 200 m, Philip van Dueren in the 1500 m and 5000 m and Robert Virgona with a big season best in the 5000 m after a leg of the 4 x 100 m Relay

Tomorrow (Tuesday) night we have a make up meet at Aberfeldie from 6:00 pm for the washed out Round 8. It's a repeat of last week's program, so for the sprinters have the 200/400 m double and the 4 x 100 m Relay. Middle distance athletes have the 1500/5000 m double with 3000 m for Juniors. In the Sprint Hurdles for U16 boys its the 100 m Hurdles at 84 cm, and U16 girls have the 90 m Hurdles at 76.2 cm. The High Jump and Javelin are strictly invite and not for points. Juniors please note the first track event is the Sprint Hurdles at 6.30 pm. The U16 boys have the Triple Jump at 6:30 pm with U16 girls to follow at 7:05 pm

I would ask that leading up to finals, all athletes concentrate on those events we can expect in the Region Final. This week, the program is the same as we will experience in the final so all events will count towards finals qualification. However, we could do with more coverage in a couple of areas. Track athletes, we could do with more coverage in the 400 m, throwers please give the Hammer a go and jumpers - to qualify for the Triple Jump you only need to have completed it twice during the regular season so please give that a go. Note that the 200 m, 400 m, 1500 m, Shot Put and Discus are on the program for the last time this season tomorrow night

On the subject of the Region Final, there are a good number of athletes who compete for the club who may have other commitments on the day of the Region Final. I would ask that if you are considering your options for Saturday, 7 February 2009, could you please make the Region Final your priority. So if you are from Coburg Little Athletics it would be appreciated that if selected to compete in the Region Final that you could get away early from little athletics. And if - like myself - you are also a professional runner that you consider not participating in the pro meet scheduled for that day. It would be great to come away from the Region Final with a few pennants and it is the only weekend for the summer where I ask athletes to put other considerations aside. If we make the Shield Final it would be a bonus, but I am not expecting people to miss Little Aths Regional Champs or the pro meet that are both scheduled for that day, just the Region Final

Don't forget to keep the night of Saturday, 28 February 2009 free in your diary for the Coburg Harriers summer season Presentation Night to begin with arrival from 6:30 pm for a 7:00 pm start. While a venue is currently being finalised, the likely cost will be $20 - $25 per head. We are hoping to secure a guest speaker for the evening and you will see the presentation of the Cullen Cup trophy winner for best athlete, Daryl Thomson Shield for best Coburg Little Athletics centre athlete in the Coburg Harriers, best division winners and lots more. With over seventy athletes having competed for the club so far this season, it promises to be a big night. We will be asking you to confirm your attendance closer to the date
