2008/09 AV Shield North West Region
Round 4 - Williamstown
Saturday, 15 November 2008

Beautiful spring weather greeted athletes for the first of two Williamstown meets in Round 4 action of the AV Shield North West Region competition. The forecast rain held off although a fresh breeze did present some challenges, with the headwind for the sprinters switching around in the opposite direction after their event to become a headwind for the middle distance events. The club's best ever turnout to a Williamstown meet produced some great results. The club's Division 2 and 40+ men again continued on their winning way to be remain undefeated after four rounds. And while my initial assessment had our U16 girls winning again they still did very well to finish third, as did our U18 men

A total of seven club records were broken. In a rare feat, the 2000 m Steeplechase record was broken in both the boys and girls U13 section by Luke Dragon and Leah Polycarpou. In the 3000 m Steeple, Philip van Dueren consolidated his own M45-49 club record. Daryl Thomson broke the M45-49 discus record, while Kira Davey enjoyed her last AV meet as an U13 athlete by smashing the 200 m Hurdles record by five seconds and then going across to the Long Jump to break the U13 girls record. Not content with that Davey (12) joined Cassie Musumeci (14), Natasha Grgurovic (12) and Leah Polycarpou (12) as they beat a nine year old U15 record in the 4 x 400 m Relay

In Division 2, Craig Brown took out the sprint double before Liam Magee won the 1500 m and Lawrence Willis swept his throwing events winning the Discus, Javelin and Shot Put, the latter with 10.55 m. In 40 + men, Warren Burke won the sprint double, Philip van Dueren had a day out winning the Steeple, High Jump and Long Jump. Kira Davey (U16) won the High Jump, Matthew Mifsud (U18) won the 200 m, Michael Dziadkiewicz (U18) the 100 m and Steven Marsh (U18) won the Javelin. Benny Tancredi (40+) was runner up in the 100/200 m, Daryl Thomson (40+) came second in the Discus and for the U16 girls, Leah Polycarpou was second in the 1500 m and 2000 m Steeplechase, Amber Dominutti was second in the High Jump and Kira Davey was runner up in the 200 m Hurdles. Celeste White (U18) came third in the 200 m

So at the completion of four rounds, the club's Division 2 and 40+ men and U16 girls remain on the top of their respective ladders, the U16 boys are third and our U18 boys are only percentage out of the top three. This week the sprinters have the 200/400 m double with the 4 x 100 m Relay on the program. Middle distance athletes have the dreaded program of death with the 1500/5000 m double and 3000 m for juniors. In the Sprint Hurdles for U16 boys its the 100 m Hurdles at 84 cm, and U16 girls have the 90 m Hurdles at 76.2 cm. For the throwers, the Javelin is strictly invite and not for points. Juniors please note the first track event on the program is the Hurdles at 1:00 pm sharp with the 200 m to follow at 1:35 pm. The first field event for the day is the U16 boys Triple Jump with the U16 girls to follow at 1:35 pm for their first field event of the day

To a couple of administrative matters and a reminder to all athletes to please record their proper age group when at events. A few issues in our overage section last week so please be aware of it. Also, be sure to check in with the recorders at the completion of your event, even if you DNF or DQ, as you can still use that event as qualification for the finals. Similarly the last leg relay runners must also remember to check in. Finally, with the 5000 m on the program this week, we will need lap scorers and, if you have that duty, please remember to mark the time each athlete completes their lap, rather than just indicating this with a tick

Please don't forget also that we have a very short turnaround to the next North West Region meeting with Round 6 being staged at Aberfeldie from 6:00 pm this Tuesday night

And finally, at the conclusion of competition this Saturday the club is putting together a table for the Coburg Little Athletics Centre Trivia Night. To be held at Westbreen Primary School from 7:00 pm, there are still two or three spots available at the Coburg Harriers table if you are available. After our last placed finish at last year's event, the only way is up!

CULLEN CUP

Were you aware that during the club's summer track & field season, Coburg Harrier athletes are competing for the Cullen Cup? The award is presented to the athlete who performs consistently at a high standard across five specific events, although you don't necessarily have to compete in all five events to win the trophy. The leader after four rounds is Craig Brown with the leading junior Kira Davey. Check out the Summer AV page on the club website for more details
