2008/09 AV Shield
Round 1  - Saturday, 18 October 2008
Aberfeldie

Well done to all athletes who competed in Round 1 of the Athletics Victoria Shield North West Region competition last Saturday in warm conditions. While the first round often brings a small turnout, the Coburg Harriers had their biggest first round attendance in many years. Most pleasing was that over half the squad were competing in summer competition for the first time, including ten juniors. With team results yet to be released, we can be confident the club performed very well in the junior grades. However the best performed of our teams was Men's 40+ as they scored in more events than any other overage team, while our Division 2 men performed strongly on the track and our women's Division 1 and U18 had a slow start to the season but will benefit as athletes return to action in the coming rounds

A great start to the season with five club records broken! Congratulations to Joe Brown (on debut) who broke the M60-64 club record for the 100 m and 200 m, Philip van Dueren smashed his 2000 m Steeplechase record (M45-49), Leah Polycarpou broke a nine year 2000 m Steeplechase record (U13), Kira Davey (on debut) broke the U14 girls 3 kg Shot Put record, and Megan Marsh who broke her own 4 kg Shot Put record in U14 and U15. And there were personal bests aplenty. From our U18 team we had Adrianna Crea in the 100 m and 200 m, Josh Persson in the 800 m, Steven Marsh in the 200 m, Matthew Mifsud in the 200 m and in M40-45 Daryl Thomson recorded a PB in the Discus. Several athletes went close, including Natasha Grgurvovic who missed the club's 200 m Hurdle record (U15) by just 0.66 seconds

Alana Guerin had a promising start to the season in the 800 m, Matina Konstantinakos was fastest in the 100 m for U16 girls, Rita Pana and Julie Torrini shared the load for the Division 1 Women, Rory Smyth (U16) threw an excellent 6.58 in the Shot Put, Jarrow Sarson-Lawrence (U18) ran an impressive 2:24 in the 800 m on debut. Liam Magee was comfortably the club's fastest in the 800 m (despite starting issues), Glenn Carroll showed he is a talented prospect with 2:18 in the 800 m and 26.30 in the 200 m, and Matthew Smith was a welcome addition to the middle distance squad with 11.19 in the 3000 m Steeplechase

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the performance of the U16 girls 4 x 400 m Relay. The event was their last of a long day for the four girls, one which began at Little Athletics from 8:00 am that morning. There was a lot of nervous energy as they lined up, but the team of Kira Davey, Cassie Musumeci, Amber Dominutti and Leah Polycarpou ran exceptionally to finish second and received a rousing reception from their Coburg Harrier teammates as they returned to the Harriers huddle

A good start to the season and one that hopefully we can build on. We have some exciting talent this season and if the first round is anything to go by, it looks like our junior and overage teams are in for an interesting summer. Particularly as there are up to half a dozen junior athletes yet to open their season account. And our open age teams can look forward to being strengthened by the return of several key athletes still in recovery mode from the Melbourne Marathon

This week is Program 2 at Aberfeldie from 1:00 pm. For the track athletes, it's the 1500/5000 m double (3000 m for juniors). Field athletes please note the High Jump is strictly invitation and not for points. The club will require your assistance on Saturday with four volunteers to run the Shot Put and an additional two to assist with setting up and packing away the Hurdles. The club also has to assist with taking Invitation entries, so you can expect to see the big red tent at our spot

One item that should have been mentioned last week is that qualification to compete in the relay event in the Region and Shield Final has changed from last season. Athletes will now have to run the individual 100 metres four times to be considered for the 4 x 100 m Relay in the finals. So it would be appreciated that all track athletes event qualify for the 100 metres so that you can be considered for the relay in the finals

Finally, on Saturday week Round 3 of the AV Shield season hits Coburg. The club will need people to assist in setting up the venue prior to the meet, four volunteers to run the Hammer, and then after the event we will need bodies to help pack up after the meet. It would be preferable that people who helped in the morning were not those that helped in the afternoon. If you are available, please let Brian Delaney know. After we have packed up, please feel free to join your summer comrades as we hold a pizza and pasta night in the clubrooms. Cost will be $10 for pizza and drinks are by donation from the fridge
