Australian 100 km Road Championships
Kurrawa Park, Broadbeach, Gold Coast
Sunday, 8 June 2008

Congratulations to club member Deanne Nobbs who finished second at the Australian 100 km Road Championships. On a different course to last year, Nobb's recorded a personal best time of 9:35:44 for the event and hopes to be selected for the 24 hour world challenge to be held in Seoul, South Korea in October

The faster course produced some very fast times on a 12.5 km out and back course, although a howling head wind made things a little difficult for competitors on the outward leg. Nobbs appeared to get caught up in the fast start and this cracking pace saw Nobbs go through 25 kilometres with 2:00:08 on the clock and on track for a sub nine hour finish. At this point, Nobbs had an eight minute lead on second place

At the halfway mark, Nobbs was still moving along very well with a 2:16:17 leg split for 4:16:25 but with her lead cut to just five minutes. The decisive moment came in the third leg with Kerrie Bremner overtaking Nobbs to establish a thirteen minute lead with one out and back loop remaining. At the 75 kilometre mark, Nobbs had 6:55:10 on the clock having just recorded a 2:38:45 split

Bremner was very strong at the finish and held off Nobbs who came home with a 3:00:34 last leg for 9:35:44. In the end Bremner,  from the Weston Creek Athletic Club in Canberra, recorded splits 2:08:30, 2:13:10, 2:20:55 and 2:32:1 in a remarkable display of controlled ultra running and was the worthy winner. Bremner runs very similar times to Deanne, with 3:22:49 recorded at the Canberra Marathon in April

Deanne congratulated her opponent afterwards and said how much she was looking forward to competing for Australia at this year's 24 Hour World Challenge. Well done Deanne from all your club mates at the Coburg Harriers
