2007/08 AV SHIELD SUMMER SEASON ROUND 5 - ABERFELDIE on 24 NOVEMBER 2007 Last Saturday saw some strong performances but a big drop in numbers from the previous week at Coburg saw our men’s teams put in their poorest performance since Round 1. Not so for our women’s team who had one of their strongest turnouts to continue on their merry way and record their third victory in a row
The club saw the season debut from Rita Pana – a welcome addition to our women’s sprint squad who is sure to add some further class to our women’s squad and Andrew Fletcher who is one Coburg Venue Masters finest athletes and has an overage Australian relay record to his name
Notable performances came from the relays where we put together our strongest women’s relay team in many years, certainly in this century. Laura Selvaggi, Megan Marsh, Adrianne Crea and Joanna Francken finished second, beating a Division 1 team in their heat. And in the Javelin Jackie Steel earned her first points for the club, finishing in third place. Our women’s team turned out in such force that many events had double the number of athletes needed to fill the event!
Performing well was Joanne Francken who came first in the 1500 metres as was Adrianna Crea in the Walk. Rebecca Collyer was second in the Discus and Javelin and third in the Shot Put, Laura Selvaggi was third in the Hurdles, and Jackie Steel came third in the Javelin. Luong Dao was second in the 1500 metres for Division Two, Jay Blake was the club’s fastest 200 metre runner with 25.42, Philip Van Dueren was second in the High Jump with Shane Jansen third And for the second week in a row Tim Erickson and Filip Cosic scored the quinella in the Walk
So at the completion of the round, our Division 2 men finished third and approaching the half way point of the season are in danger of missing out on the finals. Its likely that in that five team division, only the top two will qualify for the Region Final. Much happier news for our second and third teams however with our Division Three and Four men on the top of their respective ladders. And our women’s team are now on the top of their ladder and would now be looking to get their girls qualified in as many events as possible for the Region Final. Those thinking of the finals should keep in mind you need compete only once in an event to do it in the final
