2007/08 AV SHIELD SUMMER SEASON ROUND 3 - ABERFELDIE on 3 NOVEMBER 2007After having barely a dozen athletes at Williamstown, the return to the North West region "home" at Aberfeldie had the Harriers flocking back in droves with great results recorded. We also welcomed the Young family for the first time. Isaac Young is from Little Athletics where jumps appear to be his strong point. Big brother Robert could well develop into the club's leading sprinter and father Richard Young is a very handy field athlete. Those with long memories might remember Richard Young was in a talented group of junior Coburg Harriers athletes in the late 70's that included club junior record holder Peter German
Earning his first points for the club as a Coburg Harriers athlete was Tim Conway. Younger brother of the very talented sprinter Matthew Conway, Tim is a versatile athlete and on Saturday he competed in the 100 metres, 400 metres, Triple Jump and High Jump. And making their season debuts were Jo Francken, with a third placed finish in the Javelin her best result, and Michael Murrell who was third in the 3000 metres for Division 3
The best performed athlete of the day was Rebecca "Bec" Collyer, older sister of sprinter Steven Collyer. Remarkably, Bec came first in the Hurdles, High Jump and Triple Jump. All these are specialised events that don't attract too many competitors, so to earn maximum points was a huge bonus to the team and was a major factor in their placing on the day. Elsewhere, Mohamed Reese was second in the Hurdles, while Shane Jansen was third in the 800 and 3000 metres
Overall, the women's team finished a very close second to Williamstown, like last week just one more point scoring event would have had them one place higher, while our Division 2 men came third, Division 3 men won their second meet in a row and our Division 4 men came second. Ladder positions after three rounds of competition has our Division 2 men and women in third place, Division 3 men are on top of their ladder while our Division 4 men lie second
The next round of competition takes place on Saturday, 17 November at our own home track of Coburg and it will be really important to get as many athletes along to this meet as possible. In particular, our division two women are building some serious momentum at the moment and as I predicted earlier in the year it will be really exciting to see how they go over the coming weeks - if we can carry on building the team over the remainder of the season
